Western Calligraphy Workshop - Ink Cocktail with Textura

A bottle of ink can be more than just a tool. It can also be the beginning of a creative process.
In this workshop, you will mix and create your own one-of-a-kind bottle of ink by hand. From colour proportions and tonal variations to the way the ink feels on paper, you will slowly explore, observe, and adjust each detail to create a colour that is uniquely yours.
After completing your ink, we will use it to experience the Gothic Textura writing style.
Textura is one of the most classic scripts in Gothic calligraphy. It features strong contrast between thick and thin strokes, with a structured and rhythmic form that carries the atmosphere of medieval manuscripts. It is also especially suited for observing the tone, flow, and layering of ink on paper.
This is not a class that focuses only on technique. Through mixing ink, observing colour, and writing letterforms, you will experience the relationship between ink and calligraphy. When a bottle of ink that you have mixed yourself is finally put onto paper in the form of Gothic Textura, the experience becomes far more memorable than simply using ready-made ink.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to try handmade ink, enjoys Western calligraphy, or wants to explore Gothic writing in a relaxed way. No previous calligraphy experience is required, and you can follow the steps in class at your own pace.

Oliver Lao
With 10+ years of expertise, Oliver offers specialized workshops, private lessons, custom gifts, and logo design. In 2017, he founded the Lettering Artists Association of Macau (LAAOM), acting as a curator for international exhibitions. Notably, Oliver won the IAMPETH Penman Legacy Scholarship in 2026.
Oliver also manages a calligraphy tool brand and provides high-end on-site services for global luxury brands. In addition to collaborating with the Macau government on educational initiatives, Oliver recently produced a Western calligraphy series for Macau Television (TDM).
